The Sanskrit term dharma signifies the intrinsic, unchanging nature of something; for instance, sweetness is the dharma of sugar, sourness is the dharma of lemon, and so on. Dharma also relates to natural duties—lions roar, swans swim, earthworm lives in the mud. As humans, we have roles and responsibilities within society, family, religion, and community. Yet, our highest dharma as humans is to seek the ultimate purpose of life: understanding who we are, why we exist, and what we are meant to do.
Dharma, the Way of Transcendence is a collection of lectures on human dharma delivered by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder-Acarya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) during his 1972 tour of India. He explains that service is the essential dharma of all living beings; everyone constantly serves someone or something, even if it's just their own mind and senses. The central question, then, is whom or what to serve in order to maximize the return on our investment of energy.
