The inspiration behind Rupa Gosvami's works, including his extensive literary contributions, was Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the revered founder of the Gaudiya Vaisnava tradition in sixteenth-century India. To his followers, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu descended with a divine mission to uplift humanity. His Bhakti movement transformed countless hearts and spiritual paths, both in his own time and globally today, by guiding people toward a life centered on pure devotion to God. Like many moved by Mahaprabhu’s teachings, Rupa Gosvami left his worldly pursuits to fully commit to his master’s mission. The Mission of Rupa Gosvami stands out as one of the few works that devotes an entire volume solely to exploring the life and contributions of this Acharya.

The origins of this book trace back to an MA thesis completed at Bhaktivedanta College in Hungary in 2020, which was soon after published by the college. In the meantime, the author began translating parts of the work into English to share it with a spiritual mentor, to whom the book was dedicated and who did not speak Hungarian. Gradually, the translations expanded; an article derived from a major part of the book was published in the Journal of Vaishnava Studies. As the Hungarian version started to sell out, encouragement from senior devotees led the author to seriously consider an English publication.

Gratitude is extended to many for their support. While developing the thesis, the author benefited from insightful advice and critical feedback from advisor Manjari Devi Dasi and Maharani Devi Dasi, to whom thanks are sincerely given. However, the interest in Rupa Gosvami’s work and poetry began long before the MA program. For years, the author had been involved in the creation of Nava-vraja-mahima, a remarkable book series by her spiritual master Sivarama Swami. Immersed in these beautiful descriptions of Vrndavana, the author was inspired to study the works of Rupa and Sanatana Gosvamis.
